Day 2

Calgary → Heritage Park Historical Village

Spend a full day at Heritage Park, where more than 180 exhibits and heritage buildings recreate life in Western Canada from the 1860s to the 1950s. Wander cobblestone streets past a working blacksmith shop and general store, ride the antique steam train and paddlewheeler, and talk with costumed interpreters who bring the pioneer era to life — a fitting first stop on a trip built entirely around Alberta's history.

Day 3

Calgary → Cochrane → Longview → Bar U Ranch → guest ranch stay

Head northwest to Cochrane, where the Cochrane Ranche Historic Site marks the ground Senator Matthew Cochrane leased in 1881 for Alberta's first large-scale cattle operation. Continue south along the Cowboy Trail through Longview to the Bar U Ranch National Historic Site, once one of the largest ranches in Canada, for a guided walk through its original barns and corrals. The night is spent at a working guest ranch nearby, dinner included, with time to settle into ranch life before tomorrow's trail ride.

Day 4

Guest ranch → Turner Valley → Drumheller

Start with a morning trail ride or wagon tour around the ranch, weather and season permitting, before continuing east through Turner Valley, where the 1914 Dingman No. 1 well touched off Alberta's first oil boom and turned a quiet farming district into Canada's earliest energy town almost overnight. From there, drive on to Drumheller and the Royal Tyrrell Museum, stepping from ranching history straight into 70 million years of prehistoric history under one roof.

Day 5

Drumheller Dinosaur Trail → Red Deer

Spend the morning on the Dinosaur Trail loop around Drumheller, stopping at the Hoodoos — mushroom-shaped sandstone pillars that have resisted erosion for centuries — and the sweeping Horsethief Canyon viewpoint, where striped badland cliffs stretch out in bands of red, grey, and brown clay. In the afternoon, continue north to Red Deer, central Alberta's river-valley hub city, for an easy overnight roughly halfway between the badlands and Edmonton.

Red Deer → Edmonton → Fort Edmonton Park

Continue north to Edmonton and spend the afternoon at Fort Edmonton Park, Canada's largest living history museum, where four recreated streets trace the city's growth from an 1846 fur-trading post to a bustling 1920s boomtown. Ride a horse-drawn wagon or vintage streetcar between eras, and chat with costumed interpreters tending period shops and homes along the way — a hands-on counterpart to the ranching history covered earlier in the trip.

Edmonton — Alberta Legislature & Old Strathcona

Spend the morning at the Alberta Legislature Building, a stately Edwardian domed landmark that has overlooked the North Saskatchewan River valley since 1913, then cross the river in the afternoon to Old Strathcona, Edmonton's historic streetcar district, where century-old brick storefronts now house independent shops, galleries, and cafés along a lively, walkable main street.

Day 8

Edmonton → Elk Island National Park

Drive east to Elk Island National Park, Canada's only fully enclosed national park and a sanctuary that played a key role in saving the plains bison from extinction in the early twentieth century. Spend the day driving the Bison Loop Road for close-up wildlife sightings and walking the shoreline trail at Astotin Lake — a quiet, conservation-focused close to the trip's Edmonton leg before heading back south.

Head back south to Calgary, the QE2 corridor rolling past farmland and small towns for most of the drive.
