Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive Vancouver

Arrive into Vancouver, framed by the Coast Mountains and the Pacific, and settle in for the night. This is our longest and most complete western itinerary, covering both coastal British Columbia and the full depth of the Rockies over twelve days, so take the evening to rest before an early start up the Sea to Sky Highway.

Day 2

Vancouver → Squamish → Whistler

Drive the Sea to Sky Highway along Howe Sound, stopping in Squamish beneath the granite face of the Stawamus Chief, before continuing to Whistler Village, home of the 2010 Winter Olympics, for the night.

Day 3

Whistler → Kamloops

Head inland through the Coast Mountains to Kamloops, a former fur-trading post at the confluence of the North and South Thompson Rivers, and the gateway to British Columbia's dry interior.

Day 4

Kamloops → Golden

Continue east on the Trans-Canada Highway toward Rogers Pass and the Columbia Mountains, arriving in Golden, a small town at the meeting of the Kicking Horse and Columbia Rivers and the gateway to Yoho National Park.

Day 5

Golden → Yoho National Park

Spend the day in Yoho National Park, the quieter British Columbia side of the Rockies. Walk out to Emerald Lake, cross the natural rock arch at the Natural Bridge over the Kicking Horse River, and see Takakkaw Falls, one of Canada's tallest waterfalls.

Day 6

Yoho → Kootenay National Park → Radium Hot Springs

Cross into Kootenay National Park on Highway 93, stopping at Marble Canyon's narrow limestone gorge, before soaking in the mineral pools at Radium Hot Springs for the night.

Day 7

Radium Hot Springs → Banff National Park

Cross back into Alberta and Banff National Park, Canada's oldest. Ride the Banff Gondola for a panoramic view over six mountain ranges, then take in the classic view from Surprise Corner across the Bow River.

Day 8

Banff → Lake Louise → Moraine Lake

A short but spectacular day covering two of the most photographed lakes in Canada: the glacier-fed turquoise of Lake Louise, and Moraine Lake, tucked beneath the jagged peaks of the Valley of the Ten Peaks.

Day 9

Lake Louise → Icefields Parkway → Jasper

Drive the full length of the Icefields Parkway, stopping at Bow Lake and the wolf's-head-shaped Peyto Lake overlook, then the Columbia Icefield, before dropping into the Athabasca Valley and the town of Jasper.

Day 10

Jasper National Park

A full day in Jasper National Park, a certified Dark Sky Preserve. Cruise across Maligne Lake to Spirit Island, walk the boardwalks above Maligne Canyon's limestone gorge, and finish at the thundering Athabasca Falls.

Day 11

Jasper → Kelowna

A long, scenic day retracing the Icefields Parkway before turning west through the Okanagan Valley to Kelowna. Arrive in time for an evening winery visit among the lakeside vineyards, a change of pace after ten days in the mountains.

Day 12

Kelowna → Vancouver departure

Travel back over the Coquihalla to Vancouver for your departure, with time for a last stop at Granville Island's waterfront market, closing out a twelve-day traverse of the entire western half of the country.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the longest tour you offer?

It's tied for our longest itinerary alongside the Grand Eastern Canada Expedition, and our most complete western route — four national parks and both sides of the Rockies in one trip.

Do we see Moraine Lake as well as Lake Louise?

Yes, both are visited back to back on Day 8, weather and road access permitting (Moraine Lake Road is seasonal and can close for avalanche control in shoulder season).

Why does Day 11 backtrack instead of taking a more direct route?

The Icefields Parkway and the Okanagan Valley are both worth seeing in daylight, so the route deliberately retraces part of Day 9 rather than driving the more direct but far less scenic highway south.
