Itinerary

Day 1

Calgary Airport (YYC) → Cypress Hills

After breakfast on your own, depart Calgary Airport (YYC) and drive southeast through Medicine Hat toward the Cypress Hills, a forested upland rising unexpectedly above the surrounding prairie, high enough to have escaped the last ice age's glaciers. Arrive at Elkwater in the afternoon with time to settle in, then gather in the evening for a stargazing session in this Dark Sky Preserve, conditions permitting, home to one of the darkest and clearest night skies in Alberta.

Day 2

Park trails → return

Spend the morning hiking the trails around Elkwater Lake, weaving through lodgepole pine forest unlike anything else on the surrounding prairies, with chances to spot deer, elk, or a variety of birdlife along the shoreline. After breakfast included at your accommodation, take in the cool hill-country air and rolling views before beginning the drive back to Calgary Airport (YYC), closing out a getaway built around rare dark skies and unexpectedly lush highland scenery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is stargazing guaranteed?

No — it depends entirely on clear skies on the night. We'll still enjoy the park's trails and scenery either way.

How long is the drive?

Roughly 4 hours each way from Calgary Airport, which is why the route includes an overnight.

What's the best season to visit?

Summer for hiking and mild stargazing weather; late summer and fall tend to have the clearest, driest night skies.
