Pickup & drive north

Your driver-guide collects you at Calgary Airport (YYC) for the drive north via Edmonton to Elk Island National Park, Canada's only fully enclosed national park and a crucial sanctuary that helped save the plains bison from extinction. Watch the landscape shift from open prairie to Edmonton's skyline and finally to the park's rolling aspen parkland, a habitat found almost nowhere else, as you head toward a day built around wildlife-watching in this compact protected wilderness.

Bison Loop Road

Cruise slowly along the Bison Loop Road, Elk Island's premier wildlife-viewing route through rolling aspen parkland and open meadows. Keep your camera ready for herds of massive plains and wood bison grazing just beyond the vehicle, along with elk, deer, and abundant birdlife that call this fenced sanctuary home. Stops happen wherever animals appear, so pace and sightings vary, but this unhurried drive offers some of the most reliable close-up bison encounters found anywhere in Alberta.

Astotin Lake

Enjoy lunch on your own at Astotin Lake, the park's scenic centerpiece ringed by sandy beaches, picnic areas, and shaded aspen groves. Afterward, stretch your legs on the shoreline trail, watching for waterfowl gliding across the lake and listening to the rustle of parkland forest overhead. It's a peaceful midday pause at the heart of Elk Island, a chance to slow down and soak in the park's calm lakeside scenery before the afternoon drive home begins.

It's a relaxed stretch of driving, time to page back through photos of grazing bison and Astotin Lake's quiet shoreline while Edmonton's skyline briefly reappears on the horizon before the highway continues on toward Calgary and the close of a wildlife-filled day in one of Canada's most distinctive national parks and conservation success stories.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are bison sightings guaranteed?

Elk Island has one of the highest concentrations of free-roaming bison in Canada, so sightings along the Bison Loop Road are very likely, though never 100% guaranteed.

Can we combine this with an Edmonton city day?

The drive passes right by Edmonton, but we run this as its own dedicated day given the distance and time spent in the park — ask us about scheduling both on a longer Alberta stay.

Is stargazing part of this tour?

Not on this daytime itinerary — Elk Island is a Dark Sky Preserve, so let us know if you're interested in an evening stargazing add-on and we'll see what we can arrange.
